even if they're not actually sitting on your table, their butts are right there in your face. I found the physical setup to be *extremely* inconducive to a pleasant eating experience and the staff makes no effort whatsoever to help. On the other hand, I'm about 35% older than your daughter's boyfriend

They've tamed it, made it a street fare, with booths and commerce front and center. It all packs up at exactly 9pm, and there's plenty of cops. At the risk of "you should have been there when", I felt like one of those Burning Man old timers --- "you remember before there were roads, in what, 98? that was the real burning man".
Coming to a conference at SFSU, so would appreciate chowish places for dinner in that area. Any cuisines are OK, but especially less mainstream ethnic places. Also it would be good to know if they are receptive to single diners (but eating at the bar is OK w/ me, in fact I like it.) Thanks--can't wait to get back to SF; my first visit in a long ...
I'll play, based on our two trips in 2012 (still hard to pick out only 10 bites, so I cheated and listed four beverages separately!): Bites: For me the standout at Lers Ros after half a dozen visits is 26) Yum Pla Duk Foo (fried catfish) which is hard to explain but easy to eat.

Today's big news in the San Francisco food world: "Laura and Sayat Ozyilmaz, the wife-and-husband culinary team who were co-executive chefs and co-owners at Noosh in Pacific Heights, were terminated from their jobs today, following a lawsuit filed Wednesday by restaurant co-founder John Litz that charges the chefs with fraud, misappropriation of funds and breach of contract.
I really love this popcorn. It is the polar opposite of Orville Redenbacker. The kernels are small, white, but very tasty. I once found some at an Indian grocery in South City and at TJ Maxx at the Westlake Shopping Center. But I can't find it anywhere. Mail order prices are outrageous.
The 'classic' ceviche had very little citrus flavor and seemed to be more tobasco-based then anything else, to the point where my Bride and I were half expecting to be ill 6 hours hence (happily that didn't occur). The shredded baccalhau whipped into potatoes needed more fish, and was only on two slices of (admittedly thickish and competent) bread.
If you want to try a Michelin rated place, I don't know if Taj Campton Place would be in your budget, but you can get their lunch prix fixe which is cheaper than dinner, and many of the dishes are the same. We judged it more CA cuisine with a touch of Indian spicing, but the chef is extremely skillful and the Indian breads Taj makes are AMAZING.

I love Gallagher's, Keen's, Minetta Tavern, Pete Luger's, etc. but consider that the majority of NYC restaurants were steakhouses only 40 years ago when they permeated the East Coast (before there was such thing as a culinary scene) and I'd hardly consider the few holdovers to be on a level of "no shortage".

At her NYC chocolate shop Stick With Me Sweets, Susanna Yoon (formerly of Per Se) makes edible miniature works of art. These colorful, marbleized, portable chocolate domes are packed with the flavors and textures of some of Susanna’s favorite desserts, which include a kalamansi meringue pie, and the vero, a silver blue bonbon that houses a mix of sea salt caramel and crunchy pecan bits.
So I was walking around Clement a few days ago, and noticed that the old Mama san location on 8th ave, just off Clement, changed its awning (by changed, I mean painted black over the previous green, not a great paint job) and now it's called Halu, and has a subheading something like "A unique and different Japanese restaurant."
