For example Sweet Corner, Castro at Church (one of the businesses at 650 Castro, suite #180), after not quite completely changing its name to "Fluffy Puffy" several months back, went out of business; at last check, work was underway at the site, looked like a substantial remodel.

If you want to try a Michelin rated place, I don't know if Taj Campton Place would be in your budget, but you can get their lunch prix fixe which is cheaper than dinner, and many of the dishes are the same. We judged it more CA cuisine with a touch of Indian spicing, but the chef is extremely skillful and the Indian breads Taj makes are AMAZING.

I love Gallagher's, Keen's, Minetta Tavern, Pete Luger's, etc. but consider that the majority of NYC restaurants were steakhouses only 40 years ago when they permeated the East Coast (before there was such thing as a culinary scene) and I'd hardly consider the few holdovers to be on a level of "no shortage".

So I was walking around Clement a few days ago, and noticed that the old Mama san location on 8th ave, just off Clement, changed its awning (by changed, I mean painted black over the previous green, not a great paint job) and now it's called Halu, and has a subheading something like "A unique and different Japanese restaurant."
At her NYC chocolate shop Stick With Me Sweets, Susanna Yoon (formerly of Per Se) makes edible miniature works of art. These colorful, marbleized, portable chocolate domes are packed with the flavors and textures of some of Susanna’s favorite desserts, which include a kalamansi meringue pie, and the vero, a silver blue bonbon that houses a mix of sea salt caramel and crunchy pecan bits.
even if they're not actually sitting on your table, their butts are right there in your face. I found the physical setup to be *extremely* inconducive to a pleasant eating experience and the staff makes no effort whatsoever to help. On the other hand, I'm about 35% older than your daughter's boyfriend

I love the Samosa's at the Chaat Cafe, but have lots of frustration with the service there. They frequently get the order wrong or make you wait a long time. So let me suggest that if you walk a 2 long blocks from the Chaat Cafe down Folsom to 2nd Street, on the corner you will find a place called Mehfil.
