So I just made it out to this wonderful Keralan joint on High St North per the recommendation of my bank clerk. Yeah, the guy who I got at HSBC while upgrading my savings account just so happened to be Malayalam and just so happened to give me this place. Much thanks to you Thomas.

Come to think of it, this was one of the best cauliflower dishes I've ever had (although I'm not a big fan of cauliflower usually). Another hit was the Kerala prawn curry - it had a coconut/tomato base, and reminded me very much of a dish I ate in Cochin (made with calamari instead of shrimp).
The kappa biriyani is not really biriyani at all. Rather, it's kappa (crushed casava) studded with the complete contents of Thattukada's beef fry (that fiery beef thing you have with todi if you're Gordon Ramsay in Kerala.) It was awesome. An instant favorite for me as it was my first time having it.

If you want to experience true Kerala food, then I would strongly recommend finding an authentic Kerala restaurant instead of South indian restaurant. I strongly believe, the so called South indian restaurants cannot do justice to the food.

Best place to wait for your rental to be ready: Quagmires, MP 8 on the beach road. Generous drinks and oceanfront deck make this a great stop. Best lunch: Outer Banks Brewing Station, MP 9 or 10 on the highway. Really innovative menu, great wine list for the area, and good beer. But when you order the bitter, take the name into account!

As a former zing employee I have to say that it is well worth the trip (about 40 min. from Southfield). I still long for a zing sandwich at least once a week while sitting in nyc the place where all the "great" delis are. I could go on and on about how great this place is for service and selection, but I am biased. I deeply miss the place. -r.l.
This year's trip to India takes me back to Jaipur, for the first time since 1998. I'm there for a week, with no other stops in India, so please stick to Jaipur rec's only if you have them! (howler, this is really a plea to you in case you can pull off the same chow-networking magic that you did for me in Pune two years ago!)
Career demands are taking us from Northern California to the Raleigh-Durham area, a totally unfamiliar region. This being the Chowhound Board, I can freely confess that good food is a critical part of our lives, and it is with some trepidation that we leave the culinary bounty around San Francisco.
