I don't think I've ever gotten an event from any of those games, but I'm also not in any of those groups and never have been... The only thing I can think of is that there has to be a way to set it so you don't get nagged about events, but I can't see it.
Simple points here: You need Steam to play Terraria on PC, maybe you can find the limited edition box set on E-bay, but you need Steam because DRM. You don't need steam for long. Get TCCL and you can run Terraria without Steam. Terraria is not a particularly hardware intensive game.
