Getting your top loader RGB modded is an excellent way to go. From there you can feed the NES to the framemeister or OSSC and it'll look amazing. Unless you have a PVM or BVM monitor with breakout cables that accept SCART input.

I've been playing a good 10 hours, mainly grinding, and I've just blasted through to open up the wider world. How long does this game take? I want to finish it, find it to be quite a fun old game, but the lack of any substantive story really means I don't want to be spending any more than about 30 hours or so on it.

If you've never honestly played a game on a PC for a while -- it'll definitely take some getting used to. Worst case is you end up having to write the key bindings down on a post it or something and slapping it on the side of your monitor.
Logically they would have fixed the TTD before they messed with the TTK. The fact they went about it the way they did tells me a lot. I don't think the tick rate (30Hz) has changed from BF1. And I believe that PC is running a 60 Hz tick rate with the same problems so I'd be surprised if the issues we're seeing in BFV are due to tick rate.
