I tried lowering the specular distance and still no luck. It is now also happening in random combat situations, so apparently it is not limited to the areas I mentioned before. Note that while repairing items to 125% condition will also improve their resale value, this is only true up until you have Apprentice Mercantile, which then gives you the 'perk' of ignoring equipment condition for sales. Also note that "item health" is different from the condition number you see in your inventory.
The Retort only increases the positive effects of your potion, however is still a valuable tool. And finally the alembic reduces any negative effect in a potion. It is pretty important to note that with the Alembic that it will not affect your poisons. So you don’t need to drop your Alembic every time you want to make a poison...
Go to your inventory and find your Mortar and Pestle, Retort, Alembic, and Calcinator. Hit A to pick one. From there, just hit A to add ingredient, and pick one from the list. Then go down to Add ingredient again and hit A. If anything can be combined with the other ingredient you have selected, it will say so.
