Dq was the more popular franchise in Japan(initially the only market that mattered to both companies.) Both franchises went the sword and sorcery route. However ff slowly implemented atb battle system in 4, and went steam punkish with six. Both would differentiate ff from the traditional dq which was the dominate franchise.
