Hell, at least you actually had to try to dodge the Hortnet's missles. This really ticked me off, since I am a guy who really appreciates missle-storms.

Cobblestone is completely blast resistant to these fireballs, so you can just take a load and build a quick house around your portal. This will ensure a safe entrance and exit to The Nether.
