The local variant of the francheezie as I know it involves a cooked hot dog slit lengthwise and stuffed with cheese, which assembly is then wound around with still-pliable cooked bacon, placed (ideally) in a nicely toasted hot-dog bun and served with piping-hot frites.

If you want to experience true Kerala food, then I would strongly recommend finding an authentic Kerala restaurant instead of South indian restaurant. I strongly believe, the so called South indian restaurants cannot do justice to the food.

Does anyone have an opinion on which of the few remaining German restaurants have the best of these dishes, especially beef rouladen. The restaurants on my list are the usual suspects--Edelweiss, Chicago Brauhaus, Resi's, Laschett's, Mirabell, Bavaria Hof(Schaumburg), and of course Berghoff's.
She was referring to Gale Street Inn and their father, a life long Chicagoan, enjoyed the Chicago Style Ribs at Gale Street. We decided to meet at GSI for dinner and since I had been dismissive of GSI's ribs in my response to Sweet Willie I gave the rib/chicken combo another try, last was about a year ago.

One of my first posts on this board was to seek a good butcher on the northwest side/near northwest suburbs. You responded and recommended Devon Avenue meats, and I've been going there, on a regular basis, ever since. It is a fine butcher shop--top quality meats, helpful service, and, as you point out, not unreasonable prices.

Hmm, that's too bad that you wasted your time and money at Khyber Pass. Chicago has sooo much diversity in Indian and Pakistani cuisine that, I would be surprised if there is a city in North America that has more widely diverse regional Indian and Pakistani restaurants than Devon Avenue in Chicago.

I've never been to The Spice House, I could be wrong, but I believe the only Chicago area location is in the Old Town area. But, being a resident of the western suburbs, I do shop frequently at Penzeys in Naperville.

I stopped by Tiffin on Devon this weekend, and much to my surprise (based on the feedback here) found something called "Kerala Chili Crab" on the menu. Not sure how authentic it is, but it was delicious! The dish consisted of shredded crabmeat served in a "light" (relative to the rogan josh we also ordered) but very flavorful coconut-based sauce.
