Also can't format the card, and games won't work (error) while the card is inserted. I'll try formatting to fat32 when I'm at a computer later and see if that enables my switch to format the card.

You should be able to enter the gift card # and then see what the remaining balance is, then pay that off with a CC I did that at target.com a few years ago, Gamestop should let you pay off the rest with a Visa card.

Yes, as a matter of fact it goes to the SD card by default. The only thing you can't store on the SD card is save data and, iirc, system update data.
