There are 2/3 floors each, and in one of them there is what looks like a storage room. In one of the storage rooms is the alembic :D. Oh - and keep in mind there are two dormitories.

My current archer went and grabbed the Krosis mask immediately after getting the Enhanced Dwarven Crossbow, then went and grabbed the Savior's Hide and that Agent of Mara buff for some early game magic resistance, which is just generally useful.

I'm finding more and more that player home crashing is a fault of console limitations and not individual mods. Houses just have too much info to handle over normal cells (storage, displayed gear, mannequins, live-in followers, prefab clutter, etc), and the console just can't keep up.
