You have to do it from the single player pause menu. Go to the Online tab, select the bottom option to go onto GTA Online and then the options for crew/friends only sessions and/or solo sessions should pop up. Ignore the cops and let your homies take care of them. As long as you don't kill any cops, your wanted level will not be aggrivated. If a rioter is attacking you and there are no GSFs nearby, then feel free to kill them, but don't press your luck any more than you have to (ie: use your fists or a melee weapon).

Before starting the mission, go get a tank and store it in your Shoreside garage. It's a tough fit, but you can do it. Save your game, grab a car, and start the mission. Instead of taking the truck that's outside, go in the garage and take that one. There's body armor next to it, allowing you to recharge.
